Robin Snow

The snow has continued to periodially blanket the landscape in Garrett County Maryland.   It seems it is the custom to name the snow in the Spring.   We have the "robin snow", service snow" and sometimes the "forsythia snow".   There seem to be more than the usual number of robins this season.   When we have snow on the ground the poor things hop about, scratching and searching for food.  As I walk around our field in the morning I have been fascinated watching them flitter about, trying to survive.  So I have started a series of Robin Snow paintings.

This is a small 4x6 watercolor sketch

Black and White

The current exhibit in the Backroom of the Garrett County Arts Council is called "Black and White".  Four artists who work in black and white are displaying their work.  This is a sophisticated show by accomplished people. The diversity of each artist's work makes in an interesting show.
The reception is from 5-7 on April 7th at The Gallery at 206 E. Alder Street in Oakland, MD.

Oil Monoprint

SPRING IS HERE!!!!  It seems like a long wait for Spring in Garrett County.   The very first sign that it is really Spring is when our pond melts and goes from white to a gorgeous green.   When we returned home from Cleveland yesterday I was thrilled to see a green pond in front of our house .   The winter has afforded me a lot of time to play around with stuff in the studio.  I was working with water soluable oil paints one day and came out with this rather abstract forest kind of piece.   I love the fact that the trees (are they really trees?) were made with a credit card.   (It is probably a better use of the credit card that how I usually use it.)  I really like this one, for some crazy reason.

I Just Felt Like It

is the name of the show that is at the Saville Gallery at 9 N. Center Street in Cumberland.   This is one outstanding show that is being put on by the Potomac Fiber Arts Guild Felting Group.   The show will be up until April 2nd.   If you like to see truly creative work, color, fabric and fiber. . .  go see it.
It blew me away.
I bought a scarf at the opening reception last night.   The scarf is felt on silk.

The yellow scarf.
( know, Karen, yellow is not my color)

New Studio

This "new" studio is inspiring me to do all kinds of things.    Now I can use my laptop in the studio
(I have a place to work).   I can even get on line, which is a whole new thing for my studio life. Today I  have been putting photos of my paintings in the computer.   It is really great to be able to work in the
studio on the photos of paintings as well as the photos
that I sell.

I have been alternating between computer work and making another attempt at making monoprints with watercolors.   At the same time I have been organizing my collage papers.
I recently gave a little demonstration to the Western Maryland Watercolor Society on how I do the collages.
Here is one I did after we had been in Tortola.

Sue's Studio

Last week I visited  my artist friend  Lisa Peterson's new studio in Cumberland Maryland.   I was soooo inspired. I immediately began trying to figure out how to improve my own studio.   I spent 6 days purging, cleaning, painting new storage areas and organizing.  I have had such fun getting it reorganized.  If you have been to my studio, I hope you can see the VAST improvement in storage and space.  If you haven't been here, please come see me. (However it might be best to wait until this new 4 inches of snow is gone.)

My Studio

Before. . .looking into the second room

After
I have two rooms that make up the studio.   The first room (the original) is my "dirty" space where I paint, make jewelry, mono types, etc.    The second room is a "clean" space where I cut mats, frame and have a small gallery.    It is the perfect set up for me.
