More Show Time

Last night was the reception and awards for the Western Maryland Watercolor Society Spring Show at the Saville Gallery in Cumberland Maryland.
Much to my astonishment I was given two awards.  One was for Landscape and the other for Flora and Fauna.   I posted the sunflower painting on the blog last week. . .this is the landscape

Watercolor For REAL Beginners

This past week I taught a workshop called "Watercolor For REAL Beginners" for the Garrett County Arts Council.  The goal was to introduce people to the basics of watercolor.   We started with "this is watercolor paper", "this is paint" etc.   We then progressed to painting a color wheel  and  mixing color in shapes.
The second day was "paint along with Sue" day.   I painted then they painted, with the end result being a landscape of a farm in the area.   The third day they chose their own landscape to paint, executed a  value sketch, recreated the drawing on watercolor paper and painted the picture.   There were 6 ladies in the class, 4 of them had never painted at all.
I was absolutely astounded at their paintings so I am posting all of them.

Show Time

It is that time of year again. . . . show time.   Tomorrow is the day to take in work to the Allegany Arts Council's Saville Gallery for the Western Maryland Watercolor Society Show.   There are all kinds of rules for submitting to this show.   One is that the work must have been done in the past 2 years and cannot have been shown in the area.  I did this painting at the end of winter when I was waiting for Spring.

The sunflower painting  is on gessoed illustration board.    I was happy with the textures and the way the colors  flowed.

Painting again

It is gorgeous in Bittinger Maryland.  The beauty of the area makes me want to paint landscapes. . . .again.
The greens are varied and lovely, the fields ripe with promise of harvests to come, the flowers keep coming.
(This week the mountain laurel are starting to bloom.)
I just have to paint barns and things.
The first painting is of Tuscany. .  . .a different style for me, but I love the colors.
The other two are of local scenes.
I wonder how many barns I can paint in a lifetime. . .

Mountain Maryland Plein Air

What a great week for art in Western Maryland.    The Allegany Arts Council Plein Air event started on Tuesday and ends today.  There were 30 artists painting around the area for 4 days.  We were fortunate to have one of the artists stay in our guest house for the week.  Eberhard Froehlich turns out to be a wonderful artist and a fine person.  (I picked the poor guy's brains about art everyday.)  We had a grand time hosting him.   Saturday was the finale will the "quick draw" on the downtown mall from 10-12 and the awards reception that evening at the Saville Gallery.   It is a fabulous show that will hang until June 11.
